The best Premier League documentaries on Amazon & Netflix

Football documentaries have become increasingly popular with fans in recent years, with Amazon Prime Video and Netflix leading the charge to showcase the world’s biggest sport.

Streaming platforms are now giving fans unrivalled access to behind-the-scenes content about the teams they support and the personalities in the game they admire most.

We assess some of the best documentaries featuring teams and managers in the English Premier League, starting with one which gave a fascinating insight into Arsenal.

All or Nothing – Arsenal

Amazon were given exclusive access to Arsenal stadium during the 2021/22 season and the finished series was a sight to behold for fans of other clubs.

After splashing out an eye-watering £140 million players on new players during the summer transfer window, the Gunners made a dreadful start to the new campaign.

Their fans went into meltdown, and manager Mikel Arteta bore all the hallmarks of a man who was asked to perform open-heart surgery without a medical qualification.

The series culminates with Arsenal still in with a chance of securing a place in the Champions League. We won’t spoil the fun by revealing the glorious ending.

99 – Manchester United

One of the greatest achievements in football – Manchester United’s 1998/99 treble success – is featured in the brilliant Amazon documentary entitled 99.

The Red Devils defied the odds to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League during a historic ten-day period at the end of the season.

The documentary delivers untold stories from inside the dressing room, revealing the struggles, conflicts and moments which etched the club’s name into footballing folklore.

Gary Neville, David Beckham, and Paul Scholes are among the players who offer insights into a season that was one of the most memorable in the club’s history.

All or Nothing – Manchester City

Amazon struck lucky when giving the All or Nothing treatment to Manchester City, with the club allowing them to portray the club in a ‘warts and all’ light.

The documentary covers the historic 2017/18 season when Pep Guardiola’s side finished a whopping 19 points clear of Man United to clinch the title.

Guardiola is as intense behind the scenes as you would imagine him to be – a perfectionist who leaves no tactical stone unturned in his pursuit of glory.

The players also contribute massively to the depth of this documentary, which undoubtedly surpasses many other sanitized sports series.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In

United’s aforementioned treble was the headline moment of Sir Alex Ferguson’s glittering managerial career, cementing his status as an all-time great.

Amazon’s superb Never Give In documentary explores how Ferguson reached the pinnacle of his chosen profession, starting with his time in Scotland.

Ferguson broke the established order north of the border with Aberdeen before heading south to rewrite the record books with the Red Devils.

Never Give In offers a loving insight into the mind of a genius – a man whose accomplishments in the Premier League are unlikely ever to be matched.

Jose Mourinho Documentary

Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was previously the subject of an enthralling Amazon documentary – The Best Coach in the World – in 2010.

It is a measure of the man that he will have a second bite at the cherry next year on Netflix, which will explore his life in professional football.

Mourinho has been a hugely divisive figure in football, with his penchant for becoming embroiled in controversies tempered by truly heart-warming moments.

Produced by John Battsek and directed by Joe Pearlman, the new Mourinho documentary promises to be an unmissable work of art.
